sports betting news

AEK 13.5 : Rivaldo has announced that he is to stay at AEK Athens next season, going back on an earlier decision to quit Greece. AEK president Demis Nikolaidis persuaded the 36-year-old Brazilian forward not to leave the country after his club failed to win the title, following the awarding of points to rivals Olympiakos when an opponent fielded an ineligible player. Rivaldo, who has played at Milan and Barcelona and starred in Brazil's 2002 World Cup victory, spent three seasons at Olympiakos from 2004. He moved to AEK last year after a contract dispute.

Panathi. 11.5 : Panathinaikos booked their place in next season's UEFA Champions League qualifiers when they beat Aris 3-1 in the Greek league playoffs on Sunday and nearest rivals AEK Athens only drew. The results gave Panathinaikos an unassailable five-point lead over AEK in the end of season mini-league that decides who will have the chance to join champions Olympiakos in next year's group stages. AEK, who finished the regular season in second place two points behind Olympiakos, will now compete in the UEFA Cup. AEK host Panathinaikos and Panionios travel to Aris on Wednesday in the last of the six-game Greek league playoffs.

Olympia. 22.4 : Olympiacos have been confirmed as Greek champions after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected a petition by Apollon Kalamarias. The Piraeus club finished the season with 70 points, two ahead of rivals AEK Athens, but Olympiacos had been awarded 3 points for a February 3 game they lost to Apollon, who fielded an ineligible player.

The court in Lausanne, Switzerland, upheld the first ruling, enabling Olympiacos to celebrate their 36th league title and their eleventh in the last 12 campaigns. AEK Athens now join Panathinaikos, Aris Thessalonikiand Panionios in the end-of-season play-offs. The winning team will earn a UEFA Champions League second qualifying round slot, with the runners-up securing a place in the same round of the UEFA Cup

Olympia. 20.4 : Olympiakos finished top of the Greek championship but will have to wait for a court ruling before they are confirmed as champions for the 11th time in 12 years. Olympiakos beat Iraklis 3-1 in their final game to remain two points clear of AEK Athens yet could still lose the title if the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport rules against them. Last-place Apollon Kalamarias have filed a complaint to CAS to regain the total of four points they lost for fielding an ineligible player when they beat Olympiakos 1-0 on February 3.

Olympiakos were still awarded three points by the Greek Football Federation because Apollon's Roman Wallner, signed in January, had already represented two clubs this season, Scottish sides Falkirk and Hamilton Academical. FIFA rules state that a player can only play for two clubs in a season but Apollon argued that the EPO had sanctioned the transfer. If CAS recommend the removal of the three points from Olympiakos then AEK, 2-0 winners over Asteras on Sunday, will be named champions.

Panathinaikos, Aris and Panionios all won on the last day and will be three of the four sides participating in the play-offs to determine European qualification. At the other end of the table, Atromitos's loss to Panionios saw them join already relegated Veria and Kalamaria as the sides who will be playing in Division B next season.
