League format : Soccer / Football : Norway : Premier Division 2011
In 1990, the Norwegian Football Federation changed the name of the top league in Norway from 1st division to Eliteserien (Premier Division). The highest level in Norwegian football is also known as Tippeligaen, the name sponsored by sports betting company. The Norwegian top flight has been expanded from this season to include 16 teams, rather than 14, meaning that everyone will have four more matches to play in 2009.
The Tippeligaen winner and the runner-up are qualified for the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and UEFA Cup respectively. The best ranked teams also qualify for the Scandinavian Royal League, a winter tournament that includes top four league finishers from Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The two lowest ranked teams in the Tippeligaen are relegated to the second tier of the Norwegian football league, 1st division, while the top two teams from 1st division are promoted in their place. The third lowest team in Tippeligaen is forced to play a promotion/relegation play-off against the third placed team in 1st division. It's a two-legged match.
