Kobenhavn sack coach Nilsson

Kobenhavn have parted company with coach Roland Nilsson after six months in the job. The 48-year-old Swede agreed a three-year contract in May after guiding Malmo to the title in his homeland last season. Kobenhavn tops the Danish league standings after 18 rounds, but failed to reach the UEFA Champions League and were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League group stage this season. Chief executive Anders Horsholt admitted that the relationship had failed as there was "no agreement" between Nilsson and the board over the future direction of the club. Nilsson is to be replaced by sporting director Carsten V Jensen, who will combine both positions.

League format : Soccer / Football : Denmark : Super League 2011/2012

Football has a long tradition in Scandinavia, particularly in Denmark. Founded in 1889, the Danish Football Association is one of the oldest in Europe. Since 1996, the Super League (SAS Ligaen) is the elite football competition in the country and consists of 12 teams. They play three rounds of eleven matches in a 33-game schedule. All teams play each other twice at home and once away, or once at home and twice away, depending on their standing in the previous season. In contrast to the other Scandinavian leagues, the Danish campaign begins in July. The championship takes a mid-season break, from early December to early March.

The team that has accumulated the most points at the conclusion of the season wins the Danish Super League title, also earning a spot in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. The second-placed team and the winner of the Danish Cup qualify for the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Cup. The two bottom placed teams in the Super League are automatically relegated to the Danish 1st Division, while the two highest-placed clubs in the 1st Division are promoted to the top flight. The best four teams from the Kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden also participate in the Royal League. It's an attempt to shorten the long winter breaks clubs in those countries must endure, and make them more competitive in international play.
