injuries news

Phoenix 17.9 : The Phoenix Mercury beat the Detroit Shock 108-92 on Sunday and wrapped up their first league title in the deciding Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. A fast start helped Phoenix become the first team in the WNBA's 11-year history to claim the title on the road. Cappie Pondexter, in her second year in the league, scored 26 points and was chosen as the series MVP. She also had 10 assists and made several key baskets in the second half to squash any hopes of a Detroit comeback. Penny Taylor scored 30 points and Diana Taurasi had 17 for the Mercury.

Indiana 8.9 : Tamika Catchings could start rehabilitation on her injured foot in about six weeks. Her complete recovery from a torn Achilles tendon that cost the Indiana Fever a chance at their first WNBA championship appearance will take a lot longer. She tore the tendon in her right foot during the deciding Eastern Conference playoff game against Detroit on Monday. Two days later, she had surgery. Her recovery now is projected at six to nine months, which could prevent her from playing in Europe this winter, normally part of her offseason routine, or preparing for the Olympics next summer.

Indiana 23.8 : Forward Tamika Catchings participated in her first full practice in a month on Tuesday as the Indiana Fever preparess for their playoff opener. Catchings was a leading contender for the MVP award before she injured her left foot on July 20 and missed the final 13 games of the regular season. She averaged 16.6 points, 9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 3.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks before her injury.

Detroit 13.8 : Forward Kara Braxton was suspended two games by the WNBA after pleading guilty to operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Braxton has played in 30 games, with 20 starts, for the Detroit Shock, averaging 6.6 points. She will miss Tuesday's home game against Houston and a game at Minnesota on Thursday.

Seattle 7.8 : Leading scorer Lauren Jackson and center Janell Burse will miss a two-game road trip this week to Minnesota and Detroit. Jackson, who is averaging 23.8 points and 9.7 rebounds, has returned to Australia to be with an ill family member and the Seattle Storm expect she to return in time for Saturday's game against Washington. Burse, who is averaging 8.8 points and 5.3 rebounds, has played despite pain in her left wrist caused by damaged ligaments. She is scheduled to have surgery on the wrist August 14, and could also play on Saturday.

Indiana 22.7 : All-Star forward Tamika Catchings is expected to miss two to three weeks after she sustained a partial tear of the plantar fascia in her left foot in Friday's 89-80 loss to Detroit. Catchings leads the Fever in points, 16.8, rebounds, 9.1, assists, 4.6, and a league-high 3.15 steals.

Minnes. 12.7 : Guard Lindsey Harding ill miss the rest of season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She will have surgery after suffering the injury Tuesday at Washington. Harding, the No.1 pick in this year's draft, was leading all rookies at 11.7 points and 3.9 assists per game, and she was second among rookies at 4.4 rebounds per game.

Seattle 7.7 : Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird had successful arthroscopic surgery on her left knee Friday to remove loose particles. Bird is expected to miss about two weeks and she will not participate in the All-Star game. Bird is averaging 10.4 points and 5.0 assists in 16 games this season for the Storm.

Phoenix 24.6 : Guard Diana Taurasi received a two-game suspension from the WNBA on Saturday for inappropriate conduct toward game officials. She was punished for her actions at the end of Phoenix's 87-84 loss to the Detroit Shock on Friday. Taurasi will serve her suspension by sitting out consecutive games against the Houston Comets on Sunday and next Saturday.

Sacram. 5.6 : Forward DeMya Walker will miss the rest of the season after tearing a tendon in her right knee in Saturday's 88-85 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Walker, who was averaging 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds through five games, was the Monarchs' leading scorer during their 2005 title run. Meanwhile, Sacramento signed free agent forward Linda Frohlich and waived center Brittany Wilkins. Frohlich played the Indiana Fever in 2006, averaging 2.5 points per game.

Houston 1.6 : Houston All-Star Sheryl Swoopes, 36, will miss two to four weeks with a bulging disc in her lower back. The three-time league MVP has averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds this season.
