Spanish Primera Liga Weekly Review

Weekly report : 5.5.2008

Ten-man Real Madrid scored twice in the final two minutes to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory at Osasuna and win their 31st Spanish league title on Sunday. With Villarreal beating Getafe 2-0 in an earlier match, Real had to win the game to retain the championship but suffered a major setback when defender Fabio Cannavaro was dismissed at the start of the second half.

With three matches left to play, Real have an unassailable 10-point lead over Villarreal at the top of the table. Thierry Henry and Bojan Krkic scored two goals each as third-placed Barcelona snapped a five-game winless streak with a 6-0 rout of Valencia. Murcia squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Racing Santander and will join Levante in the second division next season.

Weekly report : 28.4.2008

Real Madrid crushed Athletic Bilbao 3-0 at home to edge closer to the Spanish title but Villarreal's 1-0 victory at Betis put their celebrations on hold for at least another week. Real's victory means that with four games left to play they remain 10 points clear of Villarreal at the top of the table on 75 points and will claim their 31st league title if they win next week's match at Osasuna.

Third-placed Barcelona are four points behind Villarreal after their 2-0 loss at Deportivo Coruna, while Atletico Madrid remain in fourth spot after drawing 1-1 at Getafe. Racing Santander lost ground in the hunt for the final UEFA Champions League place after slumping to a 3-1 defeat at Mallorca. Levante were relegated from the top flight when they lost 2-0 at Recreativo Huelva.

Weekly report : 21.4.2008

Real Madrid moved closer to retaining their Spanish title with a 2-0 win away at Racing Santander. Real's lead atop the Primera Division is now ten points with Villarreal now their nearest challengers due to their 2-0 home success against Valladolid. Villarreal took advantage of Barcelona's 0-0 draw against Espanyol by moving into second spot. Barcelona have won just one of their last eight games.

Real Madrid have 72 points, Villarreal have 62 points, Barcelona 61. Atletico Madrid and Sevilla suffered heavy home defeats, which dented their hopes of playing in next season's UEFA Champions League. Atletico lost 3-1 to Betis, while Sevilla went down 4-1 against Almeria. However, Atletico are fourth with 54 points, Racing Santander have 53 and Sevilla 51. There are five rounds remaining.
