transfers news

Arizona 24.9.11
Arizona get Zagurski

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired left-handed reliever Mike Zagurski from the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later. Zagurski had a 5.40 ERA with four strikeouts in four games with the Phillies this season. He also went 4-0 with 11 saves and a 2.65 ERA in 46 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 28-year-old has played parts of three seasons in the majors with the Phillies, going 1-0 with a 6.82 ERA in 37 games.

Boston 1.8.11
Red Sox gain Bedard to boost starting staff

The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox got oft-injured lefty Erik Bedard from the Seattle Mariners in a three-team trade before the deadline. The Red Sox also got right-hander Josh Fields, a 2008 first-round draft pick. Boston first sent minor league right-handers Stephen Fife and Juan Rodriguez and catcher Tim Federowicz to the Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Trayvon Robinson and then traded Robinson to Seattle with minor league outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang in exchange for Bedard and Fields.

Oakland 1.8.11
Diamondbacks agree Ziegler deal

Oakland's lone move at the trading deadline was to send right-handed reliever Brad Ziegler to Arizona in exchange for left-handed reliever Jordan Norberto and first baseman Brandon Allen. Ziegler had a 2.49 ERA in 223 appearances with Oakland while pitching in almost every role in the bullpen. Norberto, 24, will join the Athletics, and Allen, 25, will report to Triple-A Sacramento.

St Louis 1.8.11
Furcal accepts trade to Cardinals

The Cardinals acquired former All-Star shortstop Rafael Furcal from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Double-A outfielder Alex Castellanos. The 33-year-old Furcal, who has been to the playoffs in eight of his previous 11 seasons, has battled injuries for much of the past two seasons in Los Angeles and hit just .197 in 37 games with the Dodgers this year. But the 12-year veteran has begun to pick it up of late, hitting .303 with a .425 on-base percentage in his last nine games. The trade comes just three days after the Cardinals acquired starter Edwin Jackson and relievers Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepczynski from the Blue Jays in a trade that sent outfielder Colby Rasmus to Toronto.

Pittsburgh 31.7.11
Pirates get Derrek Lee

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired veteran first baseman Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night. The deal, which came on the eve of MLB's non-waiver trade deadline, saw minor league first baseman Aaron Baker headed to Baltimore. The 35-year-old Lee is hitting .246 with 12 homers and 41 RBI in 85 games this season, his first with the Orioles. He was signed to a one-year, $7.25 million deal in the offseason. A two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, Lee has also played for San Diego, Florida, the Cubs and Atlanta.

Philadel. 30.7.11
Phillies acquire Pence

The Phillies got the right fielder Hunter Pence and cash from Houston for three minor leaguers and a player to be named. "I think every competitor at the highest level wants to be in a pennant race, wants to be in a World Series," Pence said in Milwaukee, where the last-place Astros lost 4-0 to the Brewers. "I'm pretty lucky now I get to jump on board with one of the best teams, and hopefully have an opportunity to do that." The 28-year-old Pence began the day with a .309 batting average, 11 homers and 62 RBIs.

Houston nabbed two of Philadelphia's top prospects in first baseman Jonathan Singleton and right-hander Jarred Cosart. The 19-year-old Singleton was batting .282 with nine homers and 47 RBIs for Class-A Clearwater. He was selected by the Phillies in the eighth round of the 2009 draft. The 21-year-old Cosart was 9-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 20 games, 19 starts, for Clearwater. Rebuilding Houston also got 25-year-old righty Josh Zeid, who was 2-3 with two saves and a 5.65 ERA in 21 games, 11 starts, for Double-A Reading.

San Fran. 29.7.11
Carlos Beltran joins Giants

Carlos Beltran joined the San Francisco Giants after the defending World Series champions completed a trade to acquire the All-Star outfielder and cash from the New York Mets. The 34-year-old was plagued by knee injuries the past two seasons, but has been healthy this year and is enjoying a strong comeback season. The Giants are counting on him to bolster a sagging offense hurt by injuries to Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez. The Giants were batting .241 with 66 homers and 373 runs, all numbers that ranked toward the bottom of the NL.

San Fran. 20.7.11
Giants acquire Keppinger from Astros

With infielders Freddy Sanchez and Miguel Tejada on the disabled list, the Giants acquired second baseman Jeff Keppinger from the struggling Houston Astros for two Double-A pitchers. Keppinger, batting .307 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 43 games this season since his return from foot surgery, is looking forward to playing for a team in the playoff hunt. The Giants, meanwhile, have had numerous injury problems in their infield this season. Sanchez is out indefinitely with a dislocated right shoulder and Tejada was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with an injury to his lower abdomen. San Francisco signed former Houston second baseman Bill Hall after Sanchez was injured, but Hall is on the DL because of a leg laceration.

Atlanta 16.7.11
Braves sign 1st-round pick Sean Gilmartin

The Atlanta Braves have signed left-hander Sean Gilmartin, the team's first-round pick from Florida State. Braves director of scouting Tony DeMacio said Friday that Gilmartin is expected to "move fast through our system" after reporting to the team's minor league complex in Orlando, Fla. Gilmartin was 12-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 2011 and was selected 28th overall by Atlanta last month. He had 122 strikeouts and was ranked by Baseball America as the 16th-best college pitcher in the draft.

Milwaukee 13.7.11
Francisco Rodriguez traded to Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired former All-Star reliever Francisco Rodriguez from the New York Mets, boosting their bullpen for a second-half run at the playoffs. The trade was announced only a half-hour after the All-Star game, with the Mets sending K-Rod and cash to Milwaukee for two players to be named. The 29-year-old Rodriguez is 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA and 23 saves. Most likely, more trades all over the majors will follow before the July 31 deadline for making deals without waivers.

Tampa 7.7.11
Wade Davis sidelined with forearm strain

The Tampa Bay Rays put pitcher Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a strained right forearm, a day after he struggled in his latest start. Davis allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings Wednesday at Minnesota. Rays manager Joe Maddon said the problem had bothered Davis for the last two or three starts and hampered his slider. The 25-year-old is 7-6 with a 4.25 ERA.
