Bayern Munich remain top of the Bundesliga, but now have Schalke for close company. Bastian Schweinsteiger scored a second-half equaliser to give Bayern a 1-1 draw at Koln and extend their unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions. Schalke, who started the weekend in third place, moved within two points of Bayern with an impressive 4-1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayer Leverkusen, unbeaten in their first 24 outings, finally lost their first Bundesliga game of the season when they went down 3-2 defeat to struggling Nurnberg. The defeat means Leverkusen dropped to third place with 50 points, three behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern and one adrift of in-form Schalke. Werder Bremen came from two goals behind to force a 2-2 draw against Stuttgart.

Franck Ribery struck a late winner to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win at home to Hamburg and send the Bavarians top of the Bundesliga for the first time this campaign. The win moved Bayern onto 52 points from 24 games and took them two ahead of previous leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who were held 0-0 at home by Koln and lost top spot despite a Bundesliga record for the longest unbeaten start to the season.

Schalke, who beat arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1, are a further two points behind in third place, while Hamburg are fourth with 40 points. Cacau was the Stuttgart hero for a third successive match as his double defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1, lifting coach Christian Gross's team into eighth. German champions Wolfsburg lifted themselves to 11th thanks to a 1-0 success at second-bottom Hannover.

Bayer Leverkusen squandered a chance to go two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday when they conceded an injury-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Werder Bremen. Leverkusen, who have 49 points, stayed unbeaten after 23 games and went top on goal difference from Bayern Munich after the Bavarians' 13-match winning run ended with a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Nuremberg.

Wolfsburg beat third-placed Schalke 2-1 to end a 12-match winless run in all competitions. Schalke, whose coach Felix Magath led Wolfsburg to the title last season, dropped four points behind the leading pair after losing an eight-match unbeaten run. Striker Cacau hit four goals to inspire Stuttgart to a 5-1 victory at Koln. Bottom club Hertha Berlin won 3-0 at fellow strugglers Freiburg.
