Bordeaux survived two penalties and being reduced to 10 men for an hour to earn a 1-1 draw in their top-of-the-table clash with Montpellier. Bordeaux are ahead of Montpellier on goal difference with both teams on 52 points, two clear of Lyon, who drew 0-0 at struggling Boulogne. Marseille failed to put any pressure on the top two when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Lorient.

Marseille stay fourth in the table on 49 points, while Lille are fifth on 48 points after drawing 1-1 at Saint-Etienne. Sixth-placed Auxerre, Rennes and Sochaux recorded 1-0 home wins over Valenciennes, Monaco and Toulouse respectively. Nancy triumphed 3-2 at fourth-bottom Nice, while basement outfit Grenoble drew 1-1 with third-bottom Le Mans, who lie five points from safety.

Montpellier moved level on points with Ligue 1 leaders Bordeaux after a Joris Marveaux double clinched a 3-1 home win over Rennes on Saturday. Bordeaux, who have two games in hand, lead promoted Montpellier on goal difference on 51 points. In-form Lyon moved up to third, two points off the pace, thanks to a 2-0 home victory over Nice.

Marseille thrashed arch-rivals Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 away on Sunday to move up to fourth place. Marseille are on 48 points, three behind Bordeaux whose visit to Le Mans, also scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to high winds and heavy rains sweeping France. Lille dropped to fifth on 47 points after losing 2-1 at home to Auxerre.

Struggling Saint-Etienne prevented Montpellier joining Bordeaux at the top of Ligue 1 by beating the second-placed team 1-0. Promoted Montpellier, who had won their previous five league games without conceding a goal, have 48 points from 25 games, three points behind Bordeaux. Saint-Etienne are fifth from bottom, six points from safety. Lille required a late winner to defeat Rennes 2-1 and stay third.

Champions Bordeaux did not play this weekend as the French League agreed to postpone their game against Auxerre to give them a break before Tuesday's UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg at Olympiakos. Brazil midfielder Michel Bastos scored a hat-trick to help Lyon thrash Sochaux 4-0. Senegalese striker Mamadou Niang also hit a hat-trick as Marseille beat Nancy 3-1 at home.
