French Ligue 1 Weekly Review

Weekly report : 11.5.2008

Lyon stayed two points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with one match left after a 1-0 home win over Nancy. Second-placed Bordeaux beat Sochaux 2-0 to set up a thrilling finale. Lyon will visit lowly Auxerre next weekend while Bordeaux travel to strugglers Lens. Bordeaux are 14 points ahead of third-placed Nancy, fighting to win a spot in the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

At the other end of the Ligue 1 table, Strasbourg will play in Ligue 2 next season after a 4-1 home defeat by Caen on Saturday left them four points from safety, while Paris Saint-Germain moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 home draw with Saint-Etienne. However, PSG, Lens or Toulouse will join Strasbourg and Metz in Ligue 2 after next weekend's final matches.

Weekly report : 4.5.2008

Lyon were held to a 0-0 draw by Nice and must wait until the next round to try to clinch their seventh straight French title. Pierre Ducasse scored in injury time at Marseille to move Bordeaux to within two points of the Ligue 1 leaders with two games to go. Nancy are in third place with 60 points after a 3-0 win over visiting Strasbourg, while fourth-placed Marseille have 58.

Saint-Etienne and Lille, both chasing a spot in next season's UEFA Cup, drew 0-0. The draw means fifth-placed Saint-Etienne have 54 points, one point more then Lille. At the bottom of the table, 19th-place Strasbourg slipped closer to relegation with 35 points, while 18th-place Paris Saint-Germain, No. 17 Lens and No. 16 Toulouse all have 39 points. Metz have already been relegated.

Weekly report : 27.4.2008

Karim Benzema scored twice, including his league-leading 19th goal of the season, to rescue a point for Ligue 1 leaders Lyon who recovered from the half-time dismissal of Fabio Grosso to draw 2-2 at home to Caen. With three matches left the French champions have 72 points from 35 games, four points ahead of second-placed Bordeaux who drew 0-0 at home to mid-table Nice.

Marseille ramain in third place and the UEFA Champions League berths after their dramatic 3-2 victory at Monaco. The win gave Marseille 58 points from 35 rounds, one point more than Nancy, who drew 1-1 at Valenciennes. Paris Saint-Germain stayed third from bottom and in the relegation zone after a 3-1 win over Auxerre, but moved level on 38 points with Lens, who lost 3-2 at Le Mans.
