Pearce named temporary England boss

The English Football Association has confirmed that Stuart Pearce will take temporary charge of the national team following Fabio Capello's resignation. The 49-year-old Pearce, a former Manchester City manager, runs the British Olympic and England under-21 teams. He will now manage England in their friendly international against the Netherlands on February 29. Capello quit Wednesday, angry that he had not been consulted by the FA over its decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy. A day after Capello resigned, British bookmakers installed Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp as the man most likely to take the job.

Capello resigns as England manager

Fabio Capello resigned as England manager, capping an extraordinary day on which Harry Redknapp was acquitted of tax evasion charges, clearing the way for him to succeed the Italian. Capello's resignation came after meeting with Football Association chairman David Bernstein in which it became clear that the manager felt the decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy had rendered his position untenable. Capello said: "I leave England and I will not say anything else." When asked about the quotes attributed to him by an Italian news agency, he said they were "false". The FA is expected to ask U-21 coach Stuart Pearce to take charge as caretaker for the friendly against Holland on Feb 29, before beginning a considered search for a replacement.

FA strip Terry of England captaincy

The Football Association says John Terry has been removed as England captain after his trial for racist abuse was delayed until after the European Championship. The FA says the Chelsea defender will still be available for team selection. Terry denies making racist comments to Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October.

League format : Soccer / Football : Euro 2012

Qualifying competition is staged in nine groups: six groups with 6 teams and three with 5 teams. At the conclusion of qualifying, the winner of each group will qualify automatically. The second-placed team with the most points from games versus the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th placed teams will qualify also. The remaining eight second-placed teams will contest two-legged playoffs and the four winners will qualify for the finals. Poland and Ukraine qualify as host nations.

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  • Number of points obtained in the matches between the teams in question
  • Goal difference resulting from the matches between the teams in question
  • Number of goals scored in the matches between the teams in question
  • Number of away goals scored in the matches between the teams in question

If this procedure does not lead to a decision, aditinal criteria will apply:

  • Results of all group matches (goal difference, higher number of goals scored, higher number of away goals, fair play conduct)
  • Drawing of lot

The final tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012. This will be the last time a European Championship will feature 16 teams, as in September 2008 UEFA announced its plans to expand to 24 teams in Euro 2016.
